Refractory Castable for Pizza Ovens: common questions

What is refractory castable used for in a pizza oven?

It is cast over a former to make a dome, used for floor slabs, and used to rebuild damaged areas that are hard to repair in brick.

Is castable better than fire bricks?

Both are used to build good ovens. Brick domes are laid course by course; castable domes are cast in one piece. The choice usually depends on the design and the builder's experience.

Does a castable oven need curing?

Yes. Castable contains water that must be driven out with gradually increasing fires before the oven is used at full heat.
